Anna-tude of the week: Stop trying to pour from an empty cup….

Our society teaches us that taking care of ourselves first is selfish and a bad thing.  I don’t agree…

On an airplane, we’re instructed to put on our own oxygen masks first, before helping a child do the same.  This makes so much sense.  If you passed out due to lack of oxygen, you can’t help that child.  You have to help yourself first before you can help others.

I’ve seen far too many people let themselves get run down to the point of being ill in an attempt to take care of everyone else.  We can’t pour out any love, energy, and true compassion if we are never letting ourselves be filled up again. We can’t expect ourselves to always be on the go and on top of our game if we don’t care for ourselves and make sure all is good in our own life.

Exercise. Eat right. Get plenty of sleep. Take a few minutes each day to do something that you consider relaxing and/or refreshing. These steps won’t take a lot of time, but they’ll make you more productive and probably more fun to be around.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s one of the most important things you can do for those you love.

Taking care of yourself = keeping your cup full.  If you don’t do things to keep your cup full, you will have nothing left to give or share with others.
